About my design
by travis76
Not long ago, I suddenly realized that payphones had all but disappeared overnight....the advent of cell phones being commonplace, no doubt.
It upsets me though, to see vacant phone canopies and raw holes in the walls where they used to be, and as someone who is avidly against cell phone abuse and over-reliance, I wonder what we will do when our batteries die or we can\'t get reception.....
either way, a common creature from my childhood is going the way of the dodo.

great, awesome design for a shirt...
the speech bubble is great, as-is, but it could also be saying a dialtone "beepbeepbeepbeep.."
i would definitely buy this one.

bigger, center, as not to have that unfortunate "ma'am the phone on your boob is ringing, should i pick it up?" effect. yet $5

I wonder if they ever auction off old pay phones that are no longer in use.. I'm sure it could be modded to work as a landline...

btw.. awesome design. $5.

I would prefer this without the 'endangered species' text. I would ADORE it with only the speech bubble. It would still convey the message, without shoving it down the viewers' throats.

I really like this, but just pick either the word bubble or the wraped type.
And I kinda read species first...

Great concept and executed very well. I guess the question is: will you do a follow up concept of a cell phone that accepts quarters? I give this shirt a definite 5. Positioning is just fine, as well. And, yes, both sets of type need their distinct style...just the way they are.

quoperate on Apr 27 '06
after thinking a minute this shirt is surprisingly good. Well rendered. Seems to be the kind of thing that may go to print. Although at first I thought it was about endangered species in general, speaking through a pay phone. (which wouldn't be so good for a shirt.)

Love it.

I rarely agree with comments that ask to remove text, but in this case, "Endangered Species" just isn't needed. It adds a nice weight to that side which helps balance the composition, but you can get that with a shadow. Still, amazing drawing as usual. Only thing to be concerned about is the recent print of Landline's Revenge...not the same thing, but very similar.
travis76
   travis76 on Apr 27 '06
thanks mez, appreciate the illustrator/designer comment.
i can see the arguement grayehound has too, sometimes too much text is a bad thing.
the idea of endangered species was to act as a shadow kind of counter balance to the phone. otherwise, we have a redrawn payphone on a shirt saying something. granted, what the payphone is saying is powerful and explanitory enough to tell the story, my personal drive was to tell the (sad to me) tale of how something i have relied on heavily is literally disappearing.
on it's own, 'you'll miss me when i'm dead' would probably confuse alot of viewers as to, 'what, when the line's dead? yeah i hate when my phone goes out' or that it was just some emo suicide call for attention..
'endangered species' was literally the first element i added to the phone. i knew i wanted the phone to say something, 'you'll miss me when i'm gone' or 'don't come crying to me when your batteries are dead' were several ideas i played with. but it was secondary to the main idea, like a sur title to a movie...(HIGHLANDER: the quickening, ex)
but seriously, thank you for your intelligent and thoughful comments as excellent designers!

the color is subjective. the girls shirt can be light blue, i just wanted to show what it looked like against both colors. threadless usually doesn't do mens and womens on totally diff colors unless it's a stock availabilty issue.

I love this idea...the concept is good as-is, but here are my suggestions, for whatever they're worth:
-Maybe have the phone dangling instead of on the hook
-remove speech bubble
-switch placement of endangered and species (i like how they link together but it makes you read "species" first, which is kind of confusing)

Still great though.

dont worry eventually people will be somewhere and realize "oh, my phone's dead... now how am i gonna call the cops to get this lunatic with a pickaxe away from me? hmmm..."
i feel the same way about change. except pennies and nickels.

Oh man, I really love this.

Especially because of the text, it gives it a lot of meaning than just the phone saying something -- like you said earlier.

I hope they print this, and keep the text on it, because I would buy it for sure.

I like it on the nice brighter blue colour (that the guy model is wearing) the best. If this gets printed I hope they use that bright blue for the women's shirt too! (Since I think that colour compliments the design better than the darker colour...seeing as the text is black and all).

Great Work!

Great design. I love the use of text. Did you build the phone yourself, or live trace and then tweak it?

There are payphones in the cafeteria of my school, and I was using one the other day (my cell phone batteries ran out.. ha, ha), when a lady walked by and expressed genuine shock at the idea that there were payphones right there. "a PAY PHONE," she said, "I haven't seen one of those in a LONG TIME."

Then she went into the restroom, and I called my grandma. The end.
