Interview by Charlie Festa
Hello there, and how are you doing today?
I'm pretty jetlagged but otherwise very well thanks- and how are you?
1
How did you get your start in design?
I used to produce a magazine at primary (elementary) school called "The Chatterbox". I wrote the articles, drew the pictures, did the page layouts, photocopied it, stapled it all together and sellotaped the "free gifts" onto the front (these were usually penny sweets from my local corner shop, bought with my pocket money). It cost 20p. This was probably my first forray into "real" design. It all went downhill from there and I ended up at art school and studied illustration.
2
What inspires your work?
The 1950s, printmaking, fairground art, Mexico, other illustrators, kittens, drawing faces on inanimate objects, Japan, my friends, bad art, musical theatre, the kids at the school I work at, thrift stores, my boyfriend, froot loops, children's books, typography, coffee, zines, my ever growing collection of kitsch...
3
How does it feel to have a design selected by Threadless?
Surprising! There are so many amazing designs on the site, I feel honoured to have had designs chosen.
4
What do you plan to spend your hard-earned cash on?
Firstly, I am going to buy a comfortable chair for my studio. After that, christmas presents for friends and family.
